Sunday, January 6

This morning we come to you with a couple of announcements…One of great public service to you other farmers and backyard poultry people and two plain old statements about our Facebook pages. First…have you ever had your chickens come down with a condition that resembled a cold?  With this condition, their eyes water and they shake their head a lot. In later stages you will notice an accumulation of a crusty substance around their beak and then it spreads to their eyes. Usually one eye will begin to swell rendering the bird with a resulting blindness. Up until this time, the chicken will continue to peck, eat and drink normally. Little can be found on the internet to pinpoint the problem, with most suggesting a cold, which will run its course.

Well folks, if you see a pus buildup in the eye and holding the bird under your arm, (upside down) look on the roof of their mouth (above their tongue) and you will see a cleft that runs back toward their throat. If there is pus there also, your birds have eye worm. This worm is very harmful to poultry. It is a small white worm that lodges in the corner of a chicken's eye. The eye becomes swollen, inflamed, and watery, impairing the chicken’s vision. The eyelids may stick together and the eye may turn cloudy and eventually be destroyed. The chicken may try to scratch the eye to get rid of the irritation.
Eye worms have an indirect cycle. When the worm deposits the eggs in the eye, they pass into the tear duct; they are then swallowed by the chicken and expelled in droppings, and are eaten by the Surinam cockroaches. When the chicken eats the infective cockroach, worm larvae migrates up the esophagi to the mouth thru the tear duct, and into the eye. Wild birds are also infected, and they help spread the Eye Worm to chicken flocks. To control eye worm you must control the bugs around the chicken houses. These worm larvae can come from wood chips spread in the chicken house if not already present in your coop. feed can also be infected with the roach eggs. A good safe and green disinfectant spray can help control the roaches and their eggs…

So, there you have it…this is the first time Vick has found anything useful in the treatment of this problem. We get it from time to time and it really whacks our flock. Mortality is high, but does not kill every bird that contracts it…some survive and get better, but now we are attacking the problem with the VetRX liquid per their instructions. So much for that…

Our next announcement is that both our Nature’s Friend’s of Hospice and Cluckin’ “A” Critter Farm Facebook is down until January 20th. We had a addendum page to Vick’s regular page which was impossible for new people to find, so we are creating a separate business page for both and that cannot be accomplished until they close the addendum accounts which won’t be done until Jan. 19th. After that, we can create the business pages and send friend requests to all of you that were friends before.
Today we open the gift shop at 10:00 again. We have folks trickling in to pick up gifts or just to browse about because they saw the signs along the road and in Greenville at the red light. I believe the word is spreading and folks are curious to see the shop. We’re sure glad it’s picking up, with more and more people visiting weekly. Everyone is impressed and pleased to shop here, so it looks like we will continue to grow and take in more and more funding for hospice. Thank God for everyone’s interest and support to the extremely needed and worthy cause! Below are a bunch of pictures Vick took on her phone. They are a little bit of everything…. Enjoy
