Finding Ourselves In The Long Gray Shadows of Winter…

Every morning I am greeted with sub-zero temperatures when I open the door and let the dogs out for their first doody call of the day. I now have to wait to limit the time they are out there, because Casey Mae is inquisitive and noses around until she comes in limping…holding her right back leg in the air, hobbling around as if she has gotten a good case of frostbite in that foot. Perhaps it’s frozen snow and ice, down inside the toes and around the pad that irritates her…but she is too nosey to come directly back in before it happens. The other dogs don’t seem to mind being out there like Casey, but it’s also good to limit their time out there when it is sub-freezing like this, so I call them all back in. Once inside, they don’t waste any time getting back upstairs to the dogs beds or our bed…and before I could close the door and follow them upstairs, they will all be bedded down as if they never even got up. They are so funny…but not near as funny as they are fast!

For the next two months we will be locked into the dim gray of winter…experiencing winter beauty only during and directly after a snow fall, for as soon as it stops and we dirty the new fallen snow, it reverts back to the same, dull, frigid ugly of coldness which lasts until March. Only then will we begin to withdraw from the gray shadows of monotony in freezing to finally see some signs of the return to green. Even then, we can only imagine the green…for it will not officially appear until mid April or so, depending on the spring temperatures and how tight winters grip remains on our world.

In the meantime, we will concentrate on getting by and working in the farm and fiber shop, or working in the basement on spinning wheels, tools and stools.

I just went out and closed the shop…went to the barns and did the feeding and watering for the evening. All the animals were inside already and it was starting to rain a little. Within an hour of returning to the house, it was freezing and there was a glaze on the driveway that made it almost impossible to walk. Allie, an age old friend of Vick’s and her son Dylan were here for dinner and a visit, but since we had just finished eating and I went outside to get a bag of pellets for the stove and found it so icy, I suggested they leave at once for Tannersville, before the roads got worse. Allie said the roads were horrible all the way home, but she and Dylan made it safely and that was all that mattered.

It rained all last night and into this morning. A ton of the snow melted and we now have temperatures of forty-two as the melting continues. We will obviously have flooding problems today as the creeks cannot possibly handle all the rain and melting snow. I was surprised to see that there was no water entering the Bilco doors like last week when it rained. Go figure!

Today is acupuncture day and time spent in Delmar…feeding and watering Lynda’s chickens for her and then home again. Maybe I’ll work in the basement at the lathe this evening, since I finished the QuickBooks nightmare for 2013 last evening. Oh yeah…below are some old pictures from before, during and after Christmas that I found on my phone. They were never seen before, so enjoy…

Our friend Pam found this gem in a little consignment shop in Salem, NY. She told us and we bought it. We'll pick it up sometime this week maybe. It will be cute in the shop...

Today the temperature hovered at 42° and the snow melted all day long...until this afternoon, when the "mercury" began to drop rapidly and everything froze up. Now tonight we're doomed to high winds and a low chill factor throughout tomorrow night. After that, we are to get mild temperatures and rain again...then war for over a week! I'll take it...
