This morning we are off to Red Hook with a paper, good intentions and a cat in a box... Kay-Lee is on her way to a Veterinarian in Red Hook to be spayed, insuring we have no more unwanted kittens entering the world of the Cluckin' "A" Critter Farm in the future. Callie will also make the trip in just a few more weeks...as soon as she is done nursing her kittens and can leave them. Vick arranged the spaying through a wonderful organization in Hudson called "Animalkind, Inc." They have a great site which caters to cats and kittens. (their site is: http://www.allcreatures.org/ak/) You pay a fee and they give you a certificate to present to a local Vet who does the spay or neuter operation. They make it quite affordable for people to make the correct decision to have their pets altered to stop unwanted litters. We must be there between 8:00 and 9:00 this morning, so we have to get moving.
Later today, we'll work on the turkey house which is coming along. We will soon be ready for the roof and board & batten for the walls. We are making our own door for this building which will serve as a mid term brooding house/bedroom for the turkeys we sell for the Thanksgiving and Christmas table in the fall. We will receive turkeys from the hatchery, raise them in the brooding house until they have their feathers and try to get out, and then transfer them to the turkey house, where they will be housed, with an outside run. Once they are old enough to fend for themselves and know their "bedroom in their home", we'll allow them to free roam with the other animals until they are sold. This is exactly what we are going to do with the Cornish Cross meat birds we're selling, except they will dwell with the layer hens until their sale.
