Here it is Tuesday and if Bill hadn’t emailed me, I would have totally forgotten about the “What was it quiz”, considering the fact that I am up to my eyeballs in paperwork and out of money to make the farm go. We are selling every dozen eggs the chickens and ducks lay, but they aren’t up to snuff with only 35 to 38 eggs daily. Oh yeah....we get a day or so, here and there, when the egg count tops forty, but not too often........actually, it might have only been once in this new year.
We have thirty Rhode Island Reds in the small barn that are not laying yet and they must be 9 months old, if they are even a day! They should be popping an egg a day in that chicken house alone....not the 6 to 8 we’re getting. Perhaps the Guinea fowl or the older birds are eating eggs. I’ve caught one or two of the older hens eating egg shells, but we don’t know for sure if they are breaking them to eat or they are experiencing soft shells which break when the hens jump into the nesting box. We feed the oyster shells for the needed calcium, and give whole corn and layer pellets. It’s about forty degrees in there when it’s 5 below outside and their water buckets are heated. The pens are cozy and full of wood chips to nest in and they seem extremely happy. What’s left??????? There is plenty of light too.
Anyway, we were blessed with an inch of snow which froze to the glaze ice, allowing living beings to walk around again. It is weather like we had over the weekend that accounts for splayed pelvis bones in deer. Their hind legs slip out, as if going into a split and it tears the cartilage and muscle in the pelvis, rendering them crippled. They lie there until they either starve or are killed by a predator. Not a nice picture for sure, but nature is cruel. Survival of the fittest for sure.
Well..... We’ve had the picture on since Saturday.....And only Bill has responded. Where is everyone else? Do other people read this blog? We only have three or occasionally four people that ever respond with a comment.....and with all the readers we tick up on the counter, we cannot get above 18 followers of the blog. I just don’t understand it...... We have 25 to 75 readers a day usually, but not more than 18 actual followers. Come on folks....join up. Leave those comments! VENT !!!
Anyway, here is the picture again. What is It????? Look at the second picture which is not blocked out. Now you all know. Vick, Linda and I really laughed at this.
