Monday, October 29, 2012…Super “Frankenstorm” DAY…I Guess We’re Ready…

Everything on the TV is Sandy, Sandy, Sandy… And why???? Because this is such an unknown! Never before in history, (of presently living people anyway) has there been a hurricane that came ashore in this area, to combine with two other winter storm systems. It is creating havoc in half of the United States…from cold winter temperatures as far south as Florida and record snow fall in West Virginia, etc.
The time for preparing and talking is about over," Federal Emergency Management Administrator Craig Fugate said as Hurricane Sandy made its way up the Atlantic on a collision course with two other weather systems that could turn it into one of the most fearsome storms on record in the U.S. "People need to be acting now." [from JENNIFER PELTZ and ALLEN G. BREED’s article in The Associated Press]
We don’t really see anything out of the ordinary here yet, in fact…there is a gentle breeze blowing from the North…as usual, nothing like we were anticipating from the news which put us under a high wind warning at 9:00 AM. It is to last until sometime tomorrow, so God forbid…we could see what they predict (or not) anytime between now and then.
We will be more fortunate than most this time around, for we have our 17 KW standby generator this time, so we will have power, water, and propane for cooking if we do have a repeat performance of Irene’s damage last year. Don’t think we are gloating or under any misconceptions about the generator being a cure-all to these situations, because we know it will ease the discomfort until we run out of gas to operate it…because if roads are impassible and people can’t get to work, a gas delivery may be out of the question. If that happens, I guess you go to the next bigger tank for next time…
Yesterday we had the hospice gift shop open all day long and did not see one customer stop in. We were not surprised, because everyone we know was ripping and tearing around, getting things ready for Sandy’s arrival today. We simply had to be open, because we had advertised being open every Saturday until Christmas if at all possible and people were still interested. Ahhhhh, maybe next week-end.
Watch here for storm updates in Greenville, NY as long as we have internet service……
