Yesterday Was A Day Of Powerhouse Energy....

Yesterday was a day of powerhouse energy and vigilance in reaching our goal…ALMOST. We started out by going for feed and running a few other small errands before Josh arrived. We worked with him cleaning the barns and bringing a new round bale of hay into the barnyard for the boys (and one girl now). Vick and I closed in all the open windows with the heavy vinyl we use as windows over the screens to keep the winter winds out and keep the inside of the barn warmer. By the time we were finished with all that, it was late afternoon and my feet and legs were shot, so I retired to the house to do whatever I could and sit awhile.
Josh and Vick went into harvest mode in light of the sub freezing temperatures predicted for the next few nights. They harvested a sink full of celery and many of the wild flowers around the garden before they were nipped and wilted. Vick cut all the heliotrope on the back porch and brought them into the house to sweeten the air fragrance for a few more days before they die too. After placing them in water on the counter, she brought all her outside flowers in to escape the frost. They will now reside in the front window or on the landing under the skylight until next spring.
They raised all the potatoes and carrots, even though they could have stayed in the ground longer…but they would have quit growing anyway, so they just yanked them while they were in the harvest mood. Below are some pictures of last evening and this morning…several in testimony of the feared frost that would have nipped everything harvested.

Today we will work in the farm store, hanging chains and shelves for displaying yarns and other fiber and items. We will install two shelves high above the end display piece of furniture where the spinning wheels and fiber swifts will be displayed. Here they will be seen easily, yet not take up precious space and are easily accessible when necessary. Once the store is ready to open, we’ll give you a peek inside with pictures, but that will be a few more days at best. Keep watching though……

One tenth the number of flowers around the garden perimeter...

heliotrope from the rear deck...soooo fragrant...

Celery filled the sink and here is the finished product...

A bucket of new potatoes from one raised bed...

 A raised bed of onions.....

 A raised bed of garlic...

Puty sacked out for the evening after a hard days work...

This morning's hard frost on the windshield...

Some of what the frost was made of, plus 28 degree temperatures

A five gallon bucket full of carrots...

A wheelbarrow full of beets too.....

Some of the beets are a bit small but delicious in soup....

 The carrots are a favorite of Allie...and here's a winter's supply....

They didn't know I was there taking pictures...

Of course that didn't last long either...

More evidence of the hard frost that the sun hadn't melted totally...
